Brinell Hardness Testing Machine

Hydraulic, optical, computerised, load cell and large-component Brinell hardness testers

Hardness Testing Machines · Brinell

A Brinell hardness testing machine presses a hardened ball into the material under a high load, typically up to 3000 kgf, and the hardness is calculated from the diameter of the impression. Because the impression is large, the Brinell hardness tester averages out coarse or uneven structures, which makes it the preferred method for castings, forgings and non-ferrous alloys.

We supply every type of Brinell hardness tester machine: the hydraulic and optical B-3000 (H) and B-3000 (O), the digital B-3000 (E), the computerised B-3000 PC and fully automatic B-3000 PCFA, the touchscreen B-3000 TS and B-3000 TSFA, the load cell based Brinmax Mini, the BOSS optical system and the Brinmax 3000 range of multi-axis, bridge type, moving head and inline machines for large components and production lines.

Brinell Hardness Testing Machine: Guide

Optical vs computerised Brinell measurement

With an optical or hydraulic Brinell tester, the operator measures the impression diameter through a microscope. Computerised testers capture the impression with a camera and calculate the Brinell number automatically, which removes operator variation, speeds up testing and creates a digital record for each heat or batch.

Brinell testers for large components

For heavy castings, rolls and plates, the component stays where it is and the machine moves to it. Our moving head, bridge type and multi-axis Brinmax machines, and the inline Brinmax 3000 IB, are designed for exactly that.

Applications

  • Grey iron, SG iron and steel castings
  • Forgings and rolled sections
  • Aluminium, copper and brass alloys
  • Heat-treated blooms and billets

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Brinell hardness tester used for?

It measures the hardness of metals with coarse or non-uniform structures, such as castings and forgings, and of softer non-ferrous metals.

What loads does a Brinell hardness tester use?

Our B-3000 series testers apply Brinell loads up to 3000 kgf. 3000 kgf with a 10 mm ball is standard for steel and cast iron, while lower loads are used for softer metals.

Why choose a computerised Brinell tester?

It measures the impression automatically with image processing, removing operator error, increasing throughput and storing results with batch details for traceability.

Can you test very large components?

Yes. Moving head, bridge type and multi-axis Brinmax machines test large or heavy parts without lifting them onto a small anvil.

Do you calibrate Brinell hardness testers?

Yes. We calibrate Brinell testers to ISO 6506-2 and IS 1500 with NABL-traceable reference blocks.
